One of the important reactions in living cells from which the organism draws energy is the reaction of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) with water to give adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and free phosphate ion.

ATP + H2O ADP + PO43-

The value of Î"G°310 K for the reaction at 37°C (normal human body temperature) is - 33 kJ mol-1. Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant for the reaction at that temperature.

    3.7

    Explanation:

    Let's consider the following reaction.

    ATP + H₂O ⇄ ADP + PO₄³⁻

    We can calculate the equilibrium constant (K) for the reaction at that temperature using the following expression.

    ΔG° = - R * T * lnK

    where,

    ΔG°: standard Gibbs free energy

    R: ideal gas constant

    T: absolute temperature

    ΔG° = - R * T * lnK

    -33 kJ/mol = - 0.082 atm. L/mol. K * 310 K * lnK

    K = 3.7
