A student does a chemical reaction with two chemicals. The total mass of the two chemicals is 45.0 grams. When she is done, she finds that the mass of all the chemicals she has collected is now only 34.5 grams. Has she collected all the products of the reaction? Explain your answer.

    Explanation:

    According to the law of conservation of mass, mass can neither be created nor be destroyed. Thus the mass of products has to be equal to the mass of reactants. The number of atoms of each element has to be same on reactant and product side. Thus chemical equations are balanced.

    Given: Mass of reactants = 45.0 grams

    Mass of products = 34.5 grams

    Difference = Mass of reactants - Mass of products = 45.0 - 34.5 = 10.5 g

    As mass of reactants has to be equal to the mass of products, the student has not collected all the products of the reaction.
