Wegener's theory of continental drift was certainly groundbreaking when revealed, but it was also considered preposterous by the geologic community at the time since the general consensus was the the entire planet was contracting.

Wegener proposed that the continents had at one time been grouped together and that over time they had moved apart. Although he did clarify how exactly this happened, he did provide multiple pieces of evidence that made continental drift at least plausible.

It was not until the discovery of plate tectonics that some of Wegener's ideas were proven to be true.
