    MnO₄⁻ is species reduced as manganese gains 5e⁻ and is reduced to Mn⁺²

    Explanation:

    MnO₄⁻ + 5e⁻ = > Mn⁺²

    Mn + 4O = - 1

    Mn + 2 (-2) = - 1

    Mn = + 7

    Mn = + 7 gains 5e⁻ = > Mn = + 2
