    The component of atom discovered by Rutherford is protons.

    According to his gold foil experiment, where he bombarded alpha-particles on gold foil he discovered a positive charge center in the atom. The concentrated center has most of the mass of the atom. The positive center was introduced as nucleus containing positive charged particles, protons.
