An experiment to determine whether the outside temperature is higher or lower than 0 degree centigrade (32f) without using a thermometer is as follows.

Take two glasses and there has to be a frozen water in glass 1 and normal water in glass 2.

Now, place both these glasses in the outside environment.

If ice in glass 1 melts but level of water in glass 2 remains the same then it means that temperature outside is greater than zero degree centigrade.

Whereas if ice in glass 1 remains frozen and water in glass 2 also freezes then it means temperature outside is either zero degree centigrade or less than zero degree centigrade.
