The principal quantum number, n, describes the energy level of a particular orbital as a function of the distance from the center of the nucleus. Additional quantum numbers exist to quantify the other characteristics of the electron. The angular momentum quantum number (?), the magnetic quantum number (m?), and the spin quantum number (m s) have strict rules which govern the possible values. Identify allowable combinations of quantum numbers for an electron.

    for a given value of n, l takes (N-1) values that is from 0 to n-1, and ml takes - 1 ... 0 ... + 1 values and ms takes + 1/2 and - 1/2 value only thus the possible combinatons are

    n1 = 3s

    l = 2s

    m1 = 0sms = + 1/2

    n = 5

    l = 4

    ml = 0sms = - 1/2

    The possible combinations are shown below.

    Explanation:

    A given value of n,

    Let's take (N-1)

    Then values that is from 0 to n-1, and recall ml takes - 1 ... 0 ... + 1 values and ms takes + 1/2 and - 1/2 value only from these illustration, the possible combinations are;

    1) n1 = 3s

    2) l = 2s

    3) m1 = 0sms = + 1/2

    4) n = 5

    5) l = 4

    Finally ml = 0sms = - 1/2
