A 5.0-L flask contains a gas sample at pressure of 1.0 atm. Calculate the pressure

in the flask if the volume is doubled to 10.0 L, assuming that the temperature and amount of gas are kept constant.

    V1 = 5.0L

    P1 = 1.0atm

    V2 = 10L

    From Boyle's law, the volume of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure provided that temperature remains constant.

    Mathematically,

    V = k / P

    k = V1 * P1 = V2 * P2 = V3 * P3 = ... = Vn * Pn

    P1 * V1 = P2 * V2

    (1.0 * 5.0) = (P2 * 10)

    5 = 10P2

    P2 = 5 / 10

    P2 = 0.5atm
