If a nail made of elemental iron [Fe (s) ] is placed in an aqueous solution of a soluble palladium (II) salt [Pd2 + (aq) ], the nail will gradually disappear as the iron enters the solution as Fe3 + (aq) and palladium metal [Pd (s) ] forms.

    Yes, its a redox reaction.

    Explanation:

    It is obviously a redox reaction.

    Oxidation: Fe (s) = Fe3 + (aq) + 3e - (aq)

    Reduction: Pd2 + (aq) + 2e-=Pd (s)

    Fe os oxidized as its oxidation state increased from 0 to + 3

    Pd is reduced as ots oxidation state decreased from + 2 to 0.

    Add 2x oxidation + 3x Reduction and cancel electrons to get ionic equation:

    2Fe (s) + 3Pd2 + (aq) = 2Fe3 + (aq) + 3Pd (s)
