The label on a bottle of "organic" liquid fertilizer concentrate states that it contains 9.20 grams of phosphate per 100.0 ml and that 16.0 fluid ounces should be diluted with water to make 32.0 gallons of fertilizer to be applied to growing plants. What version of the dilution equation can be used to calculate the final phosphate concentration? Express your answer in terms of vi, ci, and vf.

    The final phosphate concentration is 0.36 g/L.

    I would express the concentrations in grams per litre and then use the dilution equation.

    V_i = 16 fl oz * (29.57 mL/1 fl oz) = 473 mL

    Mass of phosphate = 473 mL * (9.20 g/100.0 mL) = 43.5 g

    c_i = 43.5 g/473 mL = 0.0920 g/mL = 92.0 g/L

    V_f = 32.0 gal * (3.785 L/1 gal) = 121.1 L

    c_iV_i = c_f V_f

    c_f = c_i * V_i/V_f = 92.0 g/L * (0.473 L/121.1 L) = 0.36 g/L

    The final phosphate concentration is 0.36 g/L.
