    Explanation; A double-replacement reaction occurs when parts of two ionic compounds are exchanged, making two new compounds. A characteristic of a double-replacement equation is that there are two compounds as reactants and two different compounds as products. A precipitate forms in a double-replacement reaction when the cations from one of the reactants combine with the anions from the other reactant to form an insoluble ionic compound. An example of a double displacement reaction is;

    CuCl2 (aq) + 2 AgNO3 (aq) → Cu (NO3) 2 (aq) + 2 AgCl (s)

    A precipitate is formed, that is why the other name of double replacement reaction is precipitation reaction.
