Can elements be broken down into simpler substances?

    Straight from my textbook: "They were putting substances together to form new substances and taking substances apart to find out what they were made of. They found that certain substances couldn't be broken down into simpler substances. Scientist called these substances elements." So the answer to you question is no, elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
