Producers, such as a tree, make their own food. The consumers, such as a giraffe, eat the energy that the producers produce since they can't make their own. The food chain is an excellent way to view this. For example, a plant produces the energy needed for it lo live, and a sheep eats form it to achieve energy since it cant produce its own. Later, a wolf eats the sheep to obtain energy for itself and so on.
