Why do the elements potassium and sodium have similar chemical properties

    Sodium and potassium have similar chemical properties because they are in the same group I'm the periodic table. They are both in group 1 and, therefore, have one outer shell electron. As they have the same number of electrons in their outer shells, they react in a similar way.
