    1) HCl is a ionic compound

    2) That is, it is formed by a ionic bond between the hydrogen and the chlorine.

    3) The ionic bond consists on the electromagnetic attraction between two ions. One of the ions is positively charged (the cation) and the other ion is negatively charged (the anion)

    4) The two sides to which the question refers means the two ions.

    5) To form the ions that constitute the ionic bond the electronegativties of the two atoms must be very different. When that happens, the most electronegative atom will take one (or more) electrons from the least electronegative atom.

    6) Chlorine is much mor electronegative atom, so it will take the elecron from hydrogen. That will cause that chlofine ends with a negative charge and hydrogen ends with positive charge.
