    Literally plug your numbers in for the letters

    D=m/v

    Density = your mass (grams) divided by your volume (ml)

    "Get the density" is the purpose of that formula.

    In order to use the formula and get the density,

    - - Measure the mass of the lump of stuff on the table.

    - - Measure the volume of the same lump.

    - - Divide the mass by the volume.

    - - The quotient IS the mass of the lump of unknown stuff on the table.

    NOW that you know its density, you have one important clue as to

    what the stuff may actually be.
