Why does a drop of water form a sphere

The reason why is forms a sphere is because of Surface tension. So the reason for it to compose a spherical shape is because of the surface tension of the Water that sometimes minimizes the surface of the drop of Water. So the drop of Water and what it does with the area would be the potential energy.
