A Lewis acid is a substance that can accept an electron pair, while a Lewis base is capable of donating an electron pair. The Lewis definitions are based on electron pair acceptors/donors.

Usually, Lewis acids contain H + ions, as these readily accept electron pairs. However, the presence of H + itself is not the definition for Lewis acids.
