A limiting reactant is the reactant that you will run out of first. Say you have 6 atoms of hydrogen and 2 atoms of oxygen to make water. Pair 4 of the hydrogen atoms with the 2 atoms of oxygen. You have 2 hydrogen atoms left over. Oxygen is the limiting reactant because it is the reason why you can't make any more H2O molecules.
