    Glutamate is one of the most abundant neurotransmitters in the body. It is the main excitatory neurotransmitter. Glutamate binds to glutamate receptors on a postsynaptic neurone and that way it performs its function. The most important effects on the postsynaptic neuron are achieved through postsynaptic excitation of the neurons. Some of them are neural communication, learning, and memory formation. Mutations of glutamate receptors are linked to many neurodegenerative diseases.
