    In a lunar eclipse, the earth traverses the line between the Moon and the sun, darkening the moon. In other words, if you draw a line between the Moon and the Sun, put a giant circle between them that represents the earth and that's what a lunar eclipse is.

    A solar eclipse is where the moon traverses the line between the Earth and the sun, so this time, draw a line between the Earth and the sun, stick a circle between the 2 that represents the moon and that's a solar eclipse. This results in the sun being obscured from view for a short period of time, and is notable by the widely known "corona" (the gaseous envelope of the sun).
