Carbohydrates are the first source of energy of cells inside the body, it is easily broken down to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to power the cell and to generate functions of the body. Lipids on the other hand, are also commonly known as fats. These are stored energies of the cells that are used up only when carbohydrates are no longer available for energy production.

In terms of composition, carbohydrates are made-up of monosaccharaides or polysaccharides (a form of sugar). These are easily broken down in the cell and are water-soluble. Lipids consist of chains of fatty acids. These fatty acids unlike mono - or polysaccharides are non-soluble in water.
