Which is the reason that ionic compounds are brittle?

    Ionic solids are composed of parallel layers which contain cation and anion alternate positions. when a force is applied, like a hammer strike, the ion rearrange so that the ions of similar charge align, (cation with cation) (anion with anion).

    similar charges repel, causing bonds to break.
