    The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but it transforms from one form to another.

    this also applies in a food chain, for energy is decreased by 90% when moving down to the next animal (or trophic level), but it is not created nor destroyed, for the first source of energy in a food chain is always the sun, and the sun is an infinite source of energy
