A hard disk drive works by using a series of very quickly spinning "platters" aka disks, these platters are covered in magnetic strips, the actuator read, write head can both change the state of very small parts of the magnetic strip, and is able to determine the state of these strips of which is interpreted as either a 1 or a 0.
