Charpy impact test is used to measure the amount of energy that a material will absorb until it's failure. It is used to measure the toughness of a material particularly known as notch fracture due to notch that is present in speicemen while we test it. The results of the test are dependent of the notch properties.

    Advantages:

    1) It is very easy to perform and requires minimal calculations.

    2) It requires short amount of time to perform.

    3) It is cost effective test.

    Limitations:

    1) It has limited theoretical basis.

    2) The impact of the notch on the test is not taken into account when reporting the result.

    3) It cannot be used to evaluate the variation in the strength of a material subjected to a temperature change.
