Throughout his works of fiction, Franz Kafka tends to manipulate time and temporal sequences to strong narrative effect. He is able to provide the reader with a sense of time moving slowly and frequently through his use of careful descriptions of events surrounding his characters. For example, in his story The Metamorphosis, Kafka has his protagonist, Gregor, lay flat in bed without rising. In this scene, time seems as if it is moving very slowly - for Gregor and the reader - due to to Gregor's inertia.
