The colon is used to introduce an item or multiple items (the item is not capitalized unless it is a proper noun). When you list items one by one following a colon, it is optional to to use capitalization and ending punctuation. However, you should not use a colon before a list if the list directly follows a verb or preposition that would not normally need punctuation in the sentence.
