In 1867 John Augustus Roebling got a approval from New York legislators for building the bridge. In 1869, Washington Roebling father died of tetanus. After his father's death, Washington took over the Brooklyn Bridge project, and the construction began. During the course of construction, many workers along with Washington himself suffered from a disease 'caisson' which paralyzed him for lifetime. It was in 1883, after 14 years of hard work that Brooklyn bridge finally opened up.
