    The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb is the 9th of the 12 stories found in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes written by a British writer known as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story which was set in 1889 talks about Mr. Victor Hatherley, a hydraulic engineer from London.

    Colonel Lysander Stark was said to have visited the young Engineer in his office and offered him a task to examine the hydraulic press that was used to crush earth into bricks. Strange events took place and Colonel Stark tried to kill Mr. Victor using a machine. He tried to escape by jumping off a second story window but got his thumb severed in the process by Starks Cleaver.
