At the beginning of the play, Romeo is in love with a woman named Rosaline, but Rosaline does not want him back. Ben. volio is the one who convinces Romeo to forget about Rosaline and try to find someone else. He is also the one who convinces Romeo to go to the Cap. ulet party. In this way, Ben. volio personifies Romeo's love, and guides him to where it belongs.
