The main theme of "The Gift of the Magi" has to do with the Jim and Della's sacrifice and love for each other, which contrasts their material deficiencies. In that respect, Della sells her hair so that she can buy her husband a watch chain, while Jim sells his watch to get his wife a set of combs for her hair. As a result of their mutual offering and devotion, none of them can enjoy the presents they have bought for each other.
