Her husband admits giving her 400 franks to get clothes. Mathilde is yet miserable because she does not have any ornaments. Her husband tells her to adopt a bit of jewelry from her wealthy friend Mme Forestier. Matilde obtains a diamond necklace. After a charming party, she loses the necklace.
