    Gretchen is a character from the short story Raymond's Run written by Toni Cade Bambara. The protagonist of the story is a ten-year-old Squeaky who is a runner and having got a lot of medals she decides to coach her older brother who has a mental disability. Gretchen is a new girl in town, also a runner and Squeaky's competent. Squeaky is not so delighted with the girl and thinks that her smile when they were introduces to each other was fake. But she gradually changes opinion about her, firstly because of the way she is preparing for the race - she kicks her legs out like a professional.
