Explanation:

Daniel Defoe's novels "Captain Singleton" and "Moll Flanders" both revolve around the themes of abandonment by their parents since childhood. Captain Singleton was abducted and sold as a young boy to slavery while Moll Flanders was born in a prison which made her to be raised by a foster mother.

Both passages from the respective texts reveal that the protagonists of both the books have been abandoned in one way or the other by their parents. Even though Moll was a case of either staying in prison or be given to a foster parent, Colonel Singleton's case was a bit more different. He was abducted as a young boy and then sold off to slavery. Thus, there is a common trait in these two stories of being separated from their families, especially their birth parents.
