James Hurst's short story "The Scarlet Ibis," tells the story of a young child who was born with some medical issues and had to live a life of a cripple. And in order for him to be like other children, his brother, the narrator, made him do things that were hard for him which eventually led to his death.

William "Doodle" Armstrong was a child born with a physical disability. But the narrator, Brother, pushed him hard to make his brother like the other children. In his well-intended yet selfish and self-obsessed attempt to make him 'normal', Brother led him to his death. Recounting the events that led to the death of Doodle, Brother displays his regret at pushing his brother too hard just because he did not want to have a crippled brother. And when he reveals that "there is within me a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love [ ... ] and at times I was mean to Doodle", this seems to foreshadow his regret for something he has done to his younger brother.
