In this chapter, Scout and Jem are embarrassed of Atticus who is old and not interested in any sort of entertainment and he does not teach them how to use the air rifle either. He instructs them not to shoot the mockingbirds considering it as a sin.

Then Saturday come, where Tim Johnson (dog) is infected with severe rabies and limping around. The kids are nudged inside and Jem predicts that the dog was searching for a place to die.

The sheriff, Heck Tate and Atticus arrive with a rifle to kill the dog, however the sheriff is not able to do it and ask Atticus to do it. Though he hesitates in the beginning, he takes a clear shot of the dog. Scout and Jem learn that Atticus was once called One - Shot Pinch for his skills and grows a new respect for him.
