    The traditions are about trees.

    Explanation:

Every year in the neighborhood, there was a traditional celebration of tree catching ceremony that was held by Smith. He gave out many trees during the eve of Christmas. For one to receive a tree they also had to donate trees that the man threw to them while standing.

The main wish for the old man was enough food and good health in the particular day. The man did not demand anything else that would satisfy his wants but he prioritized his needs and wished for happiness for himself and his wife.
