''The Cask of Amontillado'' is Poe's short story about Montresor, a man who was insulted and injured by a friend, and therefore seeks revenge on him.

Montresor believes that it is just to seek revenge if it is deserved. Taking into consideration the 'injuries' that Fortunato brought about, he completely deserves to be punished. Montresor also claims that if one gets punished for seeking revenge, the revenge is unsuccessful: "A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser."

The motto of Monstresor family is that if someone harms a Monstresor, they will certainly be punished. This demonstrates that Montresor also seeks revenge to protect his family's honor.
