How does the necessity of water drive Salva's and Nya's struggles for survivial?

the need for the basic human liquid drives these two charaters by pushing them to walk tremendous miles and ways that most chilren in America couldn't even accomplish, yet these kids did because of there need of water. like when salva is walking all those miles with the group of people he is going for hope that water and safety is at the end.
