At the beginning of the novel, Henry is seeking glory and attention through participating in the war, but is seen to experience a variety of emotions. Henry becomes depressed and angry due to the despair brought to the soldiers, but is later viewed growing and evolving both mentally and physically. He develops a sense of honor and courage
