What does Joby symbolize in the Drummer Boy of Shiloh?

The Battle of Shiloh was a battle in the civil war ... Many young men joined the war as soldiers. I personally think Joby became the drummer boy because he wanted to be in the war like all of his peers. Also, the Joby character is thought to be based on John Clem, a drummerboy in the time of the Civil War

What is the central idea of the Drummer Boy of Shiloh?

The theme of the story "the drummer boy of shiloh" is to never give up and be brave. This is the theme because at the beggining of the story the main charcter Joby is imterested in joining the war as a drummer boy but he doesnt think he can do it

    Explanation:

The General says that the Drummer boy's role is to be the heart of the army. Why does Joby count men after waking up? Joby counts the men after waking up because he wanted to be safe instead of unsure not knowing there could possibly be an upcoming attack. The General cries because he thought deeply into the future.
