What is Harper Lee suggesting about the influence of the past on the events that take place in the novel?

    Jem's comment simply tells that family history Scout provided is only recent and that there is much more in the past leading up to now. Lee suggests that the past has defined their circumstances and the way things went along and ideas of the time and people of 1930s Maycomb.
