In the book Number the stars we have a story about a ten-year-old girl named Annemarie and her family living in the time of World War II in Nazi-occupied Denmark. When Germans came to Copenhagen, soldiers were on streets, stopping passengers and asking questions. That was the moment in which Annemarie put her fear aside and acted coldblooded. Her best friend was Jewish and was one of the people who had to flee to Sweden to find some safety there and wait for the end of the war, like the rest of Ellen's family. Annemarie's whole family was somehow involved in Resistance. Lise, her sister, was even killed by Germans. The end of the war brought her clearer perspective of what was going on and now she was waiting for Ellen to come back wearing the Star of David pendant.
