Rainsford is a hunter with integrity. He would not use unfair methods to hunt his prey. Seeks to face his rival, give him chances to fight, as he would with any other prey. He wants to make sure that Zaroff knows it's him, that he feels he is being hunted and has to fight to survive, and so get the satisfaction of knowing that his enemy knows who killed him and why.
