Lightning thief: Why aren't humans in The Lightning Thief more aware of the activities of the gods

Riordan explains this with "the Mist," which is like an invisible barrier between humans and the supernatural world. Although humans can be affected by this other world if the gods and monsters so choose, humans mostly go about their own affairs because of the Mist that doesn't allow them to see anything.
