The Restoration period in British history occurred after the Renaissance. It begins in 1660, the year in which King Charles II was restored to the English throne. The death of such King was torture, due to his doctors' complete lack of medical knowledge, whose actions, led him to a speedier and agonizing death.

Doctors during the Restoration period believed that the bad consequences of the disease were not only in the blood but also in the bowels. Therefore, some of the treatment frequently used were; bleeding sick people ounces of blood, applying heated cups to the person's skin to form blisters which would stimulate his/her system. Drugs to induce vomiting were also commonly used, as well as enemas to purify the bowels, and purgatives to clean out intestines.

Such practices, although well intentioned, cemented any sick person's path to an undoubtedly excruciating end.
