Will a indirect object only appear in a sentence that also has a direct object?

    yes, you can always have a verb that takes a direct object but no indirect object.

    The opposite is not true: in order to have an indirect object.

    Basically, an indirect object is something affected by the verb, but not directly acted on by the verb.
