This is called the "1-1-1 Rule" and is used like this: If a word has 1 syllable; 1 vowel; followed by 1 consonant (example: hop), double that final consonant before adding an ending/suffix that begins with a vowel (hop ping). This rule does not apply to x, because x has two sounds.
