    Mrs. Van Daan states that Peter's father would kill him if he catches him without his work done, however the readers know that it wouldn't actually happen, this exaggeration was used for emphasis. The use of the Hyperbole shows how work was the number one priority for the Van Daans. The Van Daans was probably a strict family full of rules.
